Elimination of mother‐to‐child HIV transmission

Maternal HIV testing and treatment is the cornerstone of prevention of mother‐to‐child HIV transmission (PMTCT) programmes, and has helped to stop over two million paediatric HIV infections since 2000. Efforts to maneuver towards elimination of mother‐to‐child HIV transmission (EMTCT) will increasingly get to specialise in prevention, and early identification and treatment of HIV infections acquired during pregnancy and breastfeeding to realize viral suppression. Women who have difficulty accessing healthcare services, or weren't offered HIV testing during antenatal care; thanks to lack of counselling or HIV test kit stock‐outs, have increased risks of not knowing their HIV status. In low prevalence countries and countries with concentrated epidemics, maternal retesting is suggested for ladies at high risk in serodiscordant relationships or members of key populations. Young women of reproductive age have the highest risks of HIV acquisition and methods like maternal HIV retesting also will be critical to interrupt heterosexual transmission as other prevention interventions are unrolled.
